About
Our Patron Saint: St. Thomas More
Thomas More (1478–1535) was a lawyer, scholar, author, and statesman in England. He served as Lord Chancellor under King Henry VIII, one of the highest positions in the country.
He was known for his sharp intellect, his commitment to education, and his deep Catholic faith. St. Thomas More was also a devoted husband and father who placed great importance on family life and formation.
At a time when it was uncommon, he ensured that his daughters received the same rigorous education as his son. His daughter Margaret, in particular, was known for her intelligence and strong faith. Through his example, St. Thomas More showed that education, character, and faith belong together in the life of the family.
He believed that learning should be grounded in truth and guided by conscience.
When King Henry VIII demanded that leaders support his separation from the Church, St. Thomas More refused. He would not act against his faith, even under pressure. For this, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and later executed.
His final witness was not one of anger, but of conviction and peace.
“I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.”
This line reflects the heart of who he was. He respected authority, but he placed God above all else.
