Intermediate (Grades 3, 4 &5)

FAITH FORMATION & RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST: Teachers guide students as they continue growing in their relationship with Jesus through daily prayer, Scripture, and reflection. Students deepen their understanding of the Church, sacraments, morality, and the Kingdom of God. They participate in Reconciliation services and liturgical experiences such as the Burning of the Palms. Students are encouraged to live out their faith through service, respect, and community.

HISTORY: Students study communities through geography, culture, history, and government. They connect these topics to Catholic values, social justice, and the lives of the saints.

READING: Students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. They read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts, including chapter books, and develop comprehension skills such as identifying main ideas, making inferences, and using text evidence.

LANGUAGE/WRITING: Students develop writing across multiple genres, including narrative, informational, and opinion writing. They learn sentence structure, grammar, and begin writing in cursive while organizing their ideas clearly.

SCIENCE: Students study weather and climate, forces and motion, and ecosystems. Through hands-on experiments, such as investigating friction, students develop observation and problem-solving skills.

MATH: Students build fluency in multiplication and division, multi-digit addition and subtraction, and multi-step problem solving. They use a variety of strategies and hands-on tools to deepen understanding.

PERFORMING ARTS: Students participate in performances and presentations that build confidence and communication skills.

SPANISH: Students continue building vocabulary and understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.

ART: Students explore artistic techniques and creative expression.

STEM: Students engage in hands-on projects that develop problem-solving and collaboration.

TECHNOLOGY: Students use digital tools to support learning.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Students develop teamwork and physical fitness.

LIBRARY: Students strengthen independent reading and research skills.

RECESS: Students have scheduled breaks including recess and lunch to support social and physical development.

Students attend Weekly Mass and take on leadership roles, including leading two Masses during the year. They participate actively in prayer and liturgical life.

STORYBOOK READING: Students prepare and present a story, demonstrating comprehension, fluency, and expression. They develop confidence in speaking and begin organizing their ideas for an audience.

Students continue practicing foundational prayers and participate in daily prayer and liturgical life.

Field experiences may include science-based trips such as the Pacific Science Center or Imagine Children’s Museum.

Through projects such as creating detailed maps and studying their local environment, students develop an appreciation for their community. Teachers connect history to faith by emphasizing stewardship, responsibility, and respect for God’s creation

READING: Students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. They build vocabulary and comprehension skills through a range of genres, including historical fiction, biographies, poetry, and informational texts. Students analyze texts, use context clues, and discuss their thinking with clarity and confidence.

LANGUAGE/WRITING: Students develop strong writing skills through multiple forms, including personal narratives, opinion writing, and research-based projects. They learn the writing process and produce structured essays with clear organization and supporting details. Grammar instruction expands to include more complex sentence structures.

SCIENCE: Students explore life science, energy, and natural systems through hands-on learning. A highlight of the year includes raising salmon from eggs and releasing them into a local watershed. Students also design experiments, such as creating volcano models, to understand scientific processes and God’s design in creation.

MATH: Students build fluency in multiplication and division and apply these skills to fractions, measurement, and geometry. They solve multi-step problems and explain their reasoning using mathematical language. Instruction emphasizes real-world application and critical thinking.

FAITH FORMATION: Students participate in programs such as Studio 3:16, engaging in reflection and activities that strengthen their understanding of faith and virtue.

PERFORMING ARTS: Students participate in seasonal performances, developing confidence in music and presentation skills while expressing their creativity.

SPANISH: Students develop basic Spanish communication skills through vocabulary, conversation, and cultural exploration, building confidence in a second language.

ART: Students explore artistic techniques and cultural themes through hands-on projects that build creativity and appreciation for beauty.

STEM: Students engage in weekly STEM activities that encourage problem-solving, design thinking, and collaboration.

TECHNOLOGY: Students learn to create presentations and digital documents, building foundational technology skills for future learning.

LIBRARY: Students visit the library weekly to explore a variety of genres and build a love of reading.

RECESS: Students have daily opportunities to build social skills, practice conflict resolution, and grow in community.

Students develop confidence and clarity in public speaking through structured reading presentations.

STORYBOOK READING:

Students prepare and present a story to an audience, demonstrating comprehension, fluency, and expression. They learn to introduce the text, describe characters and events, and read with appropriate pacing, tone, and voice. Students also begin adapting their delivery based on audience and purpose, building strong foundational communication skills.

Students continue to build a strong foundation in traditional Catholic prayer while deepening their understanding of what those prayers mean.

These prayers help students grow in trust in Mary’s intercession and develop a deeper understanding of living out peace, forgiveness, and charity in their daily lives.

Fourth grade traditions help students grow in responsibility and leadership. Students take part in caring for the American flag, leading the Pledge of Allegiance, and participating in school-wide events such as the Veterans Day Assembly.

Students also engage in meaningful service experiences, including raising and releasing salmon to support the local ecosystem. Field studies include visits to the Edmonds Watershed, where students connect classroom learning to real-world impact.

These experiences help students understand their role in serving others, caring for creation, and contributing to their community.

READING: Students read a wide range of fiction and nonfiction texts, including novels, biographies, and informational articles. They analyze characters, themes, and main ideas while developing the ability to support their thinking with evidence.

LANGUAGE/WRITING: Students write narratives, opinion pieces, and informational texts with clear organization and supporting details. They strengthen grammar skills, including sentence structure, punctuation, and the use of clauses and phras

SCIENCE: Students study Earth systems, ecosystems, physical science, and scientific inquiry. Hands-on experiences, such as working in the school garden, allow students to apply science concepts while serving others through food donation.

MATH: Students work with fractions, decimals, and multi-step problem solving. They explore geometry, measurement, and early algebraic thinking. Instruction focuses on problem-solving strategies, modeling, and real-world application.

FAITH FORMATION: Students participate in religion assessments such as ACRE and deepen their understanding of Catholic teaching.

PERFORMING ARTS: Students develop performance skills and confidence through music and school events.

SPANISH: Students build language skills through conversation, reading, and writing while learning about Spanish-speaking cultures.

ART: Students engage in creative projects that build artistic skills and expression.

STEM: Students design and build projects such as structures and models, strengthening problem-solving and teamwork.

TECHNOLOGY: Students use digital tools and resources to support learning and presentations.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Students develop teamwork and physical fitness.

LIBRARY: Students continue to grow as independent readers through regular library visits.

RECESS: Students have daily opportunities for movement, social interaction, and reset.

PREPARED READING:

Students analyze literature and present it with clarity, organization, and expression. They learn to introduce a text, develop ideas with supporting details, and present using appropriate pacing, tone, and formal speaking skills. Students also practice revising and refining their work to improve clarity and delivery.

IMPROMPTU SPEECH:

Students begin developing the ability to organize and present ideas with limited preparation time. They practice speaking clearly, thinking quickly, and adapting their message to different audiences and situations.

Students deepen their understanding of faith through prayer that connects belief, reflection, and daily life.

Students learn and pray:

• Act of Faith

These prayers guide students in reflecting on Christ’s life, understanding the communion of saints, and growing in personal belief and trust in God.

Fifth grade includes meaningful traditions such as the Seder Meal, ACRE assessment, and hosting school Masses. Students also participate in Law Day, where they engage with real-world civic systems through activities like mock trials and community interactions.

Service is a central part of the year. Students contribute through the school garden, campus responsibilities, and leadership roles.

These experiences help students grow in responsibility, leadership, and understanding of their role in both the Church and society.
