FAITH FORMATION & RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST: Teachers guide students to grow in their relationship with Christ through daily prayer, Scripture, and classroom life. Students learn to recognize God at work in their lives and in one another. They understand God as Creator, Jesus as Savior, and the Church as a community of believers. Faith is lived out through prayer, practicing virtues, and participation in Weekly Mass, where students begin to take on active roles.
HISTORY: Students explore self, family, school, and community, learning about rules, responsibilities, and how people work together. They are introduced to basic map skills, national symbols, and the concept of past and present. Through the lives of the saints, students see how faith is lived out across time and how they are part of the Church today.
READING: Reading is a central focus in first grade. Students develop phonics, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension skills through a range of genres including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and Scripture. By the end of the year, students read grade-level texts with growing fluency and are able to retell stories and identify key details.
LANGUAGE/WRITING: Students write complete sentences using correct capitalization, punctuation, and spacing. They develop writing through narrative, informational, and opinion pieces while building grammar skills such as sentence structure, nouns, verbs, and spelling of high-frequency words. Students also grow in speaking and listening skills by sharing ideas clearly.
SCIENCE: Students explore matter and energy, space, and living organisms through hands-on learning. Activities and experiments help students understand how the world works and begin to recognize order and design in God’s creation.
MATH: Students build number sense through counting, place value, and addition and subtraction within 20. They solve simple word problems and explore time, money, measurement, and shapes while learning to explain their thinking.
